I joined deviantART on July 30th, 2006. I believe it was because most people at a graphics forum I went to, Twisted Designs, joined. It seemed like a nice idea. A community of artists, critiquing each other's work and having a good time.
I was just a Photoshop artist at the time. I made signatures. I had some ambitions of photography, but never really explored the subject yet. That day I uploaded the stuff I considered my "best" and watched a few of my other forumgoers. It was nice.
Eventually I started making art purely for deviantART. Stuff like wallpapers of famous characters were made to gain popularity. It took some time to notice that it wasn't really doing anything.
A bit of a disadvantage to being a Photoshop artist was having to credit everything that you didn't make yourself. It detracted from your own comments, having to write a paragraph or two about where you got everything. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who did this, but I was paranoid of having my stuff deleted.
After a while, I put up some of the poems I had to write for a grade seven unit. I don't know why I'd want to remember them. I'm not a poetic person.
Some entries were really, really sucky, but I put 'em up just to have something there.
November was a month of development. Tired of Photoshop, I got Illustrator and believed I could draw. I actually went out and took some pictures. I joined a photography critique club and that got me some critique.
The drawing never lasted, and since I'm that ashamed of my drawings I just put them into storage. Photography lasted. I showed potential.
I stopped visiting dA now. I was bored of it, but I showed up occasionally during 2007. I posted a few more pictures here and there. I progressed in my photography and in my writing.
A friend of mine, Mary-Therese, known on dA as =emptyhead14 joined around March 2008. I thought it was cool, that someone I knew in real life had an account on the service. I knew people in my school had dA, yes (usually it was random girls in the library checking their page), but not really any friends.
This incited me to visit deviantART again. A month or two later, v6 launched and it gave me a new outlook on the service, like I had a fresh start. During my absence I gathered about 2,900 views.
Anyway, her birthday is in early August and since we both were on it a lot I thought a one year subscription would be a nifty idea. After two days, I gave in and bought myself a three month subscription.
Who knows what I'll be inspired to make. I'll definitely have some English assignments in the future, so odds are one will be fit for submission here. When I can be bothered, I take photos of landscapes, but I've photographed quite possibly all of my suburban town.
In conclusion, it's been an interesting two years. Here's for another two years of greatness at dA. ![]()
